A note from Karolyn: What began as a personal hobby evolved into something far larger than I anticipated. Once the venture generated revenue, I committed to directing a portion of proceeds to causes close to my heart. After several years working in animal welfare, I wanted to remain involved in that mission, so I structured the business to support animal-welfare organizations in need.

Xolo Sarapes is a 100% handmade, mission-based pet apparel and accessories brand that blends the colorful Mexican sarape tradition with animal activism, creating unique products while rescuing and supporting dogs and cats in need.

Animal causes they support: Local animal shelters such as Bastrop County Animal Services, Austin Animal Services, Austin Pets Alive, Austin Humane Society, rescue groups like Happy Hearth Dog Rescue and Love a Bull, spay/neuter clinics like Save an Angel, and sanctuaries like Piney Paws Sanctuary. They also support organizations nationwide and own a shelter in Mexico with over 100 dogs.

How they give back: They donate 30% of profits through their Xolo Rescue Ambassador program. They also donate thousands of dollars annually in merchandise to rescue groups and shelters, build and donate pet houses to low-income families and sanctuaries, foster dogs and cats until adoption, sponsor low-cost spay/neuter clinics, provide free spay/neuter services, and volunteer at sanctuaries, shelters, and with rescue groups.

A note from Jeannine: My business started in 1984 when I would sell drawings of teddy bears to other kids in elementary school for $2, sometimes $3 if they had a lot of requests. A year ago I left my full time corporate gig and went all in on this passion project and I am hoping to someday turn this into a recognizable brand without sacrificing the quality and commitment to sustainable practices. I create everything myself, I do my screenprinting locally on products created by companies who practice sustainability, and I never use AI because of the impact on the planet as well as wanting to maintain the humanity in my work.
